Up until recently I knew very little about my Geoghegan ancestry. However, thanks to Barry, my brother, who rooted out my grandfather's birth certificate and some additional information, we were able to back trace several generations further. The only link that I am even slightly doubtful about is that between Thomas (1) and Matthew (2). Although not proven, I don't se how they cannot be father and son. If anyone can link into this tree at any point, I would love to add your information.

Generation No. 1

1.  THOMAS1 GEOGHEGAN  He married ANN MURRAY 11 August 1797.  [In some documents his name is spelled Geaghagan and she is variously Ann(e) Murr(a)y.]

Children of THOMAS GEOGHEGAN and ANN MURRAY are:

              i.   ANDREW2 GEOGHEGAN, b. 1798.

              ii.   WILLIAM GEOGHEGAN, b. 1800.

             iii.   MARY GEOGHEGAN, b. 1803.

2.          iv.   MATTHEW GEOGHEGAN, b. 1812.

             v.   MARGARET GEOGHEGAN, b. 1814.

             vi.   THOMAS GEOGHEGAN, b. 1882.

Generation No. 2

2.  MATTHEW2 GEOGHEGAN (THOMAS1) was born 1812.  He married MARY CORMICK 1839.

Child of MATTHEW GEOGHEGAN and MARY CORMICK is:

3.            i.   EDWARD3 GEOGHEGAN, b. 1842, Tubberclaire Co. Westmeath. They seem to have had only one child - I cannot find any record of more.

Generation No. 3

3.  EDWARD3 GEOGHEGAN (MATTHEW2, THOMAS1) was born 1842 in Tubberclaire Co. Westmeath.  He married CATHERINE FLANAGAN 1874, daughter of CHRISTOPHER FLANAGAN. Tubberclair is really on the "wrong" side of Westmeath for this family, nonetheless his marriage record shows him to be from "Nohill" which is another name for Kilkenny West, which is near Tubberclair. The Flanagans are a family of long standing (and I believe still extant around Curraghbrack. As mentioned elsewhere, the census of 1901 has my grandfather (Thomas) living with his grandmother (Ellen Flanagan).

Children of EDWARD GEOGHEGAN and CATHERINE FLANAGAN are:

              i.   MATTHEW4 GEOGHEGAN, b. 1874; d. 22 September 1946, Haggs, Stirlingshire, Scotland; m. MARY ??, married and moved to Scotland believed Glasgow.

Known to have died in Haggs, Stirlingshire. Death record shows him as "single" but Irish records have him married to Mary.

ii.   ELLEN GEOGHEGAN, b. 1876. This is either a transcription error or this Ellen died in infancy and the next born was named after her (not unknown)

iii.   ELLEN GEOGHEGAN, b. 1878; d. 2 January 1962, Haggs, Stirlingshire, Scotland; m. PATRICK BENNETT. I know there are descendants of this marriage out there. One son (Michael) died in Italy during the war and another (Joseph) signed his uncle's (Matthew Geoghegan) death record. Also one Ellen Cooper in Australia who is descended from them contacted me some time ago. I have now lost her details, but at the time I did not have enough information to link our two families.

4.          iv.   ANNE GEOGHEGAN, b. 1880. Married a Hughes and that family was well recorded in Mullingar. They had 5 daughters.

5.           v.   THOMAS GEOGHEGAN, b. 30 April 1882, Co. Westmeath.; d. 14 January 1941, Dublin.

vi.   MARGARET MARY GEOGHEGAN, b. 1884; may have married a man named ROCK.

vii.   CHRISTOPHER GEOGHEGAN, b. 1886. A mystery man.

Generation No. 5

6.  THOMAS5 GEOGHEGAN (THOMAS4, EDWARD3, MATTHEW2, THOMAS1) was born 16 October 1917 in Dublin, Ireland., and died 10 August 1992 in Gainesville, GA, USA (while on vacation).  He married AGNES MAHON 7 June 1950 in Malahide, Co. Dublin, Ireland., daughter of JAMES MAHON and CATHERINE FARNAN.  She was born 1 December 1919 in Malahide, Co. Dublin, Ireland..

This was the author's father. He was born in Dublin not long after his parents moved there from the Mullingar area. He was a bricklayer - not surprisingly, as his male ancestors all seem to have been stonemasons. Up until he married he mostly lived in Charleville Avenue on the North Strand in Dublin, a place I can recall visiting as a child (although both my grandfather and uncle had died before I was born). After my parents married they moved into a house named "Knockdrin" up the Hill in Malahide, Co. Dublin. Malahide is my mother's home town and the Mahons have a long history there (but that's another story). They lived there until after my father retired, when they sold up and moved to Athlone, Co. Westmeath - not to be near his ancestors, but because both their sons and all their grandchildren lived there.

As you can see from the above, I don't have any close relatives named Geoghegan, beyond my immediate family. If my grand-uncles (Matthew and Christopher) had children, then they would be my next closest Geoghegan relatives. However, I believe Matthew dies childless in Scotland. Christopher on the other hand is a total mystery. It almost seems as if the whole family, except for my grandfather and some of his sisters just disappeared out of Westmeath. I know some of them (Matthew and Ellen) went to Scotland, but what of the rest of them. Oddly, the 1901 census has my grandfather living with his grandmother (Ellen Flanagan) aged 18.
